Une étude d’impact a permis d’identifier les principaux points de vue critiques de cette ancienne cimenterie qu’il fallait revitaliser, notamment depuis l’autre extrémité d’un vieux pont de pierres construit au seizième siècle par Sinan, l’architecte attitré de Soliman le Magnifique. Le pont franchissait l’une des poches d’eau qui alimentent Istanbul en eau douce. Hasard du temps ou urbanisme peu scrupuleux, ce pont semblait maintenant mener droit à la cimenterie. Je me suis approprié cette improbable rencontre pour établir un dialogue entre l’histoire, la plus noble, et la technologie la plus récente. J’ai fait le projet de caréner l’édifice culminant, la tour dite de préchauffage, avec une peau en acier légèrement cintrée et entaillée de fentes horizontales régulières pour assurer sa bonne ventilation. Au sommet, j’ai installé un belvédère donnant sur le pont de Sinan, et depuis lequel les visiteurs de l’usine pourront contempler ce chef d’œuvre du patrimoine turc, et embrasser le paysage environnant jusqu’à Istanbul. L’Histoire nous regarde, nous regardons l’Histoire ! Passer de la culpabilité à la fierté, tel était le message.

An impact study identified the main critical viewpoints of this former cement plant that needed to be revitalized, notably from the other end of an old stone bridge built in the sixteenth century by Sinan, the appointed architect of Suleiman the Magnificent. The bridge crossed one of the pockets of water that supply Istanbul with fresh water. Whether by chance or unscrupulous urban planning, this bridge now seemed to lead straight to the cement plant. I appropriated this unlikely encounter to establish a dialogue between the noblest history and the most recent technology. I planned to encase the highest building, the so-called preheating tower, in a slightly curved steel skin with regular horizontal slots to ensure good ventilation. At the top, I installed a belvedere overlooking the Sinan bridge, from which visitors to the plant can contemplate this masterpiece of Turkish heritage, and take in the surrounding landscape all the way to Istanbul. History looks to us, we look to history! From guilt to pride, that was the message.
