Le long du canal latéral à la Loire, la cimenterie existante était vieillotte et poussiéreuse. Il s’agissait de la moderniser de fond en comble, de ne conserver que le four le plus efficient, de remplacer les grands halls de stockage de matières par des silos et, ce faisant, assainir l’atmosphère et libérer d’importants espaces au sol. Il fallait repenser les fonctions logistiques: les services administratifs, les laboratoires de production et la salle de contrôle, les bureaux et les ateliers de maintenance, le service entretien et les magasins de pièces détachées. Tout était à refaire, sans interrompre le fonctionnement de l’usine. Sur le plan conceptuel, le défi était de viser une cohérence fonctionnelle, architecturale, paysagère et urbaine alors que les bâtiments à construire devaient trouver place dans les espaces disponibles au sein d’une très vieille usine. En quelque sorte, il fallait trouver l’image de la nouvelle usine dans les espaces laissés libres par l’ancienne. D’autant qu’il fallait construire d’abord, et démolir ensuite les bâtiments que les nouvelles constructions rendraient obsolètes. Cela nous obligera en certains endroits à construire à quelques mètres des existants, et à prier très fort lors des étapes de démolition. Imaginez une campagne de démolition, parfois à l’explosif, au milieu de constructions flambant neuves…

The existing cement plant on the banks of the Loire River was old and dusty. The project was to modernize it from top to bottom, retaining only the most efficient kiln, replacing the large material storage halls with silos, and, in so doing, cleaning up the atmosphere and freeing up significant floor space. Logistical functions had to be rethought: administrative services, production laboratories and control room, maintenance offices and workshops, service department, and spare parts stores. Everything had to be redone, without interrupting plant operations. Conceptually, the challenge was to achieve functional, architectural, landscape, and urban coherence, while the buildings to be constructed had to fit into the available space within an old plant. In a way, the image of the new plant had to be found in the spaces vacated by the old one. All the more so as we had to build first, and then demolish the buildings that the new constructions would render obsolete. In some places, we’ll have to build just a few meters away from the existing buildings and pray hard during the demolition phase. Imagine a demolition campaign, sometimes using explosives, in brand-new buildings…
